Gingerbread Recipes

Gingerbread is a term used to describe a variety of ginger sweet treats, ranging from cakes to hard biscuits. Originating in Armenia, and brought to Europe in 992 by a monk who then went on to teach the French his recipes, gingerbread is loved by many people, especially at Christmas time. About Gingerbread

Ginger biscuits were first sold in the 1500's. Before then, it had been customary to paint white biscuits and use them as window decorations. Ginger was then combined into the mixture and sold in monastery pharmacies and farmers markets to help ease digestion, combat colds and aid general health. In fact, the German government recommends eating 2-4g of ginger a day.

Gingerbread is considered a 'local' dish in Market Drayton in Staffordshire. In the 1700s, they even announced that they were a 'town of gingerbread' on their welcome sign. It's cooked all over the world — America, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and the U.K — all over Europe. They also cook a version of gingerbread in Asia, but not as we know it.

Inspired by the story of Hansel and Gretel, German-style gingerbread houses are incredibly popular as a decoration at Christmas time. They are enjoyed by children and adults alike and there are many competitions over the world for the largest gingerbread house and the best decorated gingerbread house — some are so beautiful, you just wouldn't want to eat them!
